Help for Alcohol

Treatment of Alcohol Addiction

The addiction of alcoholism is the second leading cause of death in the world. The addiction is so strong, and lasts for so many years, that the treatment of alcohol addiction has undergone many changes and refinements in order to help people with their treatment of alcohol addiction.

In the recent year over 13 million people have sought treatment for alcohol addiction and 3.1 million under the age of 12 have been in treatment programs. However the most predominant age group of alcohol abusers is in the 24 to 34 range.

Alcoholism Is A Disease

A lot of people will put off getting treatment for one of two reasons. Some don't believe they have a problem in the first place while others have a feeling of shame and will shy away from treatment. It's important for someone suffering with an addiction to alcohol to remember that this is a disease and it runs in families. If there is a history of alcohol addiction in your family, chances are that other family members are also addicted.

How To Get Treatment For Alcoholic Addictions

Once a person realizes that they can go ahead and receive treatment, they must actually want the treatment. Study after study have shown that if the person receiving treatment didn't want to be there, such as a forced rehab, they will eventually resort back to their previous alcohol abuse.

However, that isn't to say that everyone has it easy. Alcohol addiction is so strong, and so prevalent that relapse will, and do, occur. It is not uncommon for someone to save several relapses, over a long period of time, before they will be able to continue being "sober".

The method of the treatment has no direct bearing on the level of success a person can have with treatment. Several programs in both residential and outpatient treatments are all comparable as far as success and failure.

How Can I Help Someone Who Is Addicted To Alcohol?

The first thing you can do is help that person feel comfortable and not condemned. The road is going to be long and hard and there will be times when they will fail. Your job is to not judge but encourage.

Next you should help them find a support group. There are several out there, but the most widely known would be Alcoholics Anonymous which operates in cities and towns all over.

After that, finding a good support system and keeping them accountable is priceless as far as the person struggling is concerned. They need someone they can call when feeling weak and ready to fall.

Medical Treatments For Alcohol Addictions

Fortunately someone addicted to alcohol can also be helped with medical treatments. There is currently three medications approved to help battle alcoholic addictions.

Campral was approved in 2004, Naltrezone, and Antabuse which was the first drug approved for alcoholic addictions.
