Each
and ever year there is a contrast of huge proportions. There is more
money spent on promotion alcoholic products each year than promoting
anything else. Converse to that, there is more money spent treating
alcoholism than treating any other addiction. In minors alone, the US
spends close to $60 billion a year in treating underage alcohol
addictions.
Alcoholism is an addiction and is the most
commonly used drug in the world today. It is most commonly associated
with alcohol abuse and is not a discriminator of who it effects. It
doesn't matter if you are male or female, young or old, child or adult,
alcoholism can be found in all circles.
Alcoholism Facts
Because
of the widespread use of alcohol, among all age groups, there are over
100,000 deaths each year directly related to alcohol. Most people think
of drunk driving as a result of death, but there are severe health
issues related to prolonged abuse of alcohol. These would include;
live failure,
kidney disease,
heart failure,
cancer
and stroke
Alcoholism
isn't just about drunk driving, it is also a very important health
issue. Even armed with all the information we have today about the
causes of alcoholism over 14 million in the US are diagnosed with
alcohol abuse disorders. A whopping 50% of high school seniors admit to
abusing alcohol and over 32% admit to being drunk more than once a
week.
Alcohol abuse will kill six and a half times more youth
in a year than any other illicit drug. The rampant use among teenagers,
and even pre-teens, is reaching higher and higher proportions each
year. Because of this exposure to alcohol, 67% of teenagers say they
get their alcohol from their parents, teens are more likely to be
addicted to other drugs, such as cocaine.
Effects of Alcoholism
The
largest misconception of alcohol is its ability to impair your
judgment, movements, and basic functionality. This is mostly seen in
young twenty somethings. Even with a small drink your movements have
been impaired and your ability to drive a car, or operate machinery,
has greatly diminished. In some people, even small doses of alcohol can
lead to anger, physical abuse, and domestic violence.
Binge
drinking, or drinking large quantities in one sitting, can cause
considerable damage to the body, and if enough alcohol is ingested,
death can occur from alcohol poisoning.
After prolonged abuse
of alcohol is an addiction and can cause severe medical problems as
well as hallucinations, tremors, and convulsions.
